Pingbacks are nice to have, but unfortunately they can be used in a Reflection Amplification Attack. WPf2b mitigates this by logging each Pingback to match a "soft" filter rule, effectively rate-limiting any attack. It's not perfect, but I think it strikes a good balance between allowing a known-vulnerable but useful feature, and protecting the rest of the WWW.
